Harry Redknapp has spoken of his relief that Michael Dawson’s injury is not as bad as first feared.

The manager echoed the thoughts of everyone connected with Spurs when admitting he feared the worst as the popular defender lay injured on the Wembley turf on Friday night.

‘Daws’ fell awkwardly an hour into his second cap and first competitive start for England in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Bulgaria and scans have showed a sprained left medial knee ligament and sprained left ankle ligament. He’s expected to be out for six to eight weeks.

“First of all, it’s a big blow for Michael and a great shame for him,” said Harry.

“To be honest, watching it live, I thought it could have been worse than it’s turned out.

“It could have been his cruciate ligament and that would have been the end of the season for him but as it is, it’s not such a long job and he should be back in a couple of months.”

Michael’s injury highlights the value of William Gallas’ arrival in the transfer window.

Even though we have cover in central defence with the likes of Younes Kaboul, Tom Huddlestone and Vedran Corluka, Harry stressed the importance of the experience William will bring to the club playing alongside the likes of Ledley King and Sebastien Bassong in that key central area.

“Woody’s struggling, Ledley can’t play every game and you also have to remember that Michael had an Achilles injury last season, so it was always a position we needed to do something in and that’s why we did it (signed Gallas),” added Harry.

“Seb was excellent for us last season and we’ve got decent cover in there, players who can come in and do a job, but you also need experience. Ledley’s got experience, Michael’s got experience and now William’s experience will be invaluable.

“He’ll give us a bit of know-how and a real presence. You don’t do what he’s done in the game without being a top, top player and he’s got all the medals to show for it.”

Laste Dombaxe netted twice as our Under-17s lost 4-2 at home to Norwich City in the Premier Academy League on Saturday.

Once again, coach Alex Inglethorpe fielded a young team with only four Second Year trainees in the starting line-up.

The lads took an early lead when Dombaxe swept home Jesse Waller Lassen’s cross in the fifth minute.

They controlled the best part of the first half but failed to add to their advantage as chances for Waller Lassen, Kevin Stewart and Dombaxe went begging.

They were then made to pay when the visitors cashed in on a defensive mistake to level it up just before the break.

The tide turned quickly in the second half as the Canaries scored three goals in quick succession to take a 4-1 lead.

Dombaxe added a consolation late on when he was fouled in the box and picked himself up to tuck away from the penalty spot for the final 4-2 scoreline.

“We didn’t fight hard enough to retain our identity in the second half,” reported Alex.

“There is a style of play here at Tottenham and players have to learn there is no taking the easy option if they want to progress.

“It’s a learning curve for the younger players and it’s a harsh lesson, but it’s all about player development and that’s why a lot of our Second Years are involved in development matches at the moment.

“I don’t want the team to hide behind the fact that they are young, I want them to rise to the challenge and cope just like the First Years did last season.”
